Mind Matters: Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Mental Health in Real Terms
Aside from getting “the blues” after breaking up with a boyfriend and dealing with typical family squabbles, I’d never really thought much about mental illness. I mean, I have a pretty good job at a factory, get along with my parents and hope to buy my own house by the time I’m 25. But recently, things at home haven’t been great. My dad got laid off two months ago and isn’t taking it well. He’s usually really upbeat and social, but these days, he’s practically barricaded himself in the basement to sleep or watch TV for hours
at a time. And he’s been drinking a lot more. Whenever my mom tries to encourage him to look for job, he totally explodes. Are these signs that my dad could be dealing with depression?
